Practice Perfect 1001
In Tribute to Jarrod Shapiro, DPM After
Completing 1000 Issues of Practice Perfect

It is with great pride that I introduce this last issue of Dr Jarrod Shapiro’s Practice Perfect. It has been one of the great honors and pleasures of my life to have been the Editor for this valuable and memorable blog series, by this most remarkable man. The experience of working with Dr Shapiro has never been anything short of a great pleasure. He has been the single most dependable and reliable person that I have ever worked with, most often delivering issues long in advance of their due date. I have long wondered at what point he would run out of topics to PRESENT. But he never has. He is a deeply curious and creative individual who has remained actively engaged in clinical practice and training for decades; his day-to-day work with students, residents, and patients has continually generated new topics for him to explore. During the final 10 issues, he has recapped some of the broad topic areas that he has covered in his Practice Perfect issues, including cutting edge clinical issues, the personal side of patient care and how to be the best trainer of the next generation of podiatrists. This was during a time when there was not much central leadership of residency directors and attendings, so his advice has helped guide those in the residency education community as to how to be the best at running their programs and teaching their residents. He has also dealt widely with the trials and tribulations of being in podiatry practice. He has touched many of you with the mentorship that he has so generously provided for the past 20 years and so many of you have responded so beautifully to my call for tributes for him. Please see those tributes that you have contributed below as we bid farewell to Practice Perfect.

But lest you think that your Inbox will be devoid of podiatric mentorship, know that Savannah Santiago, DPM has completed 100 Sole Purpose blogs and shows absolutely no sign of slowing down, and Dr Shapiro has transitioned to the role of Associate Director of Medical Education here at PRESENT and in that role, will be making a huge contribution to the in-person, online streaming conferences and on-demand education that we develop on an ongoing basis here at PRESENT, and as such, will be making his greatest contribution ever.

"Jarrod: No words can express the great pride that I have in you and your accomplishments over the years. You were an outstanding Resident in our program (Botsford) now Corewell Health Farmington Hills Hospital. I have followed your personal and professional career, and we have remained in touch for decades. Most Program Directors would take credit for your professional success, but I knew you were exceptional in your approach to your residency training and podiatric career. Always looking for the professional higher ground and expressing that through your weekly writing and sharing it with your profession. Jarrod, it is a milestone accomplishment, and I enjoyed the journey with you, reading your thoughts and experiences. I have read every one of your 999 Practice Perfect Letters, but number 999 really touched my heart, as I feel that it focuses on my Meaning in Life. When my friends, colleagues and my wife ask, why don't I retire, I reply that I am coming down for a soft landing. But the equation of Meaning in Life = coherence+purpose+significance, as you have articulated in #999 Practice Perfect letter, is the stimulus that brings me great joy and satisfaction in my life. Thank you for your wonderful Practice Perfect series and congratulations on this accomplishment. It is well deserved."

Your program director and friend,
Marshall Solomon, DPM

"Hi Dr Shapiro,
I wanted to thank you for two decades of Practice Perfect. Your editorials have kept me engaged as a clinician and constantly push me to think more critically about the why behind what we do, not just the how. Practice Perfect is something I look forward to every week. I appreciate the personality that comes through in your writing, as well as the steady reminder to stay current, keep improving, and always aim to practice as close to “perfect” as we can for our patients.

Thank you for the time, thought, and honesty you have invested in this work. Congratulations on a successful 20 years of writing."

Best,
Benjamin Kamel, DPM

"On behalf of all my colleagues here in South Africa who are members of The Podiatry Association of South Africa (PASA) where, as a numerically small profession with limited CPD resources, we have been both honored and extremely grateful that he saw fit to allow us to share his wisdom and his superbly written PP newsletters and editorials; I wish to thank Dr Shapiro most sincerely. Our best wishes for your podiatric career going forward Jarrod, whilst of course looking forward to your remaining 10 editorials."

Best wishes,

"CONGRATULATIONS on twenty years and 1000 issues of Practice Perfect!

I can honestly say that your missives are the ones that I most often look forward to reading. Your topic selection, associated research, as well as honest and down to earth assessment regularly give insight to so many members of our great profession.

It has been a joy to get to know you personally over these years. I cherish the time that we had together on the ACPM Board of Directors.

I hope that PRESENT will encourage you to be a periodic "guest presenter" to this forum.

Take time and deliberation as to how you will utilize your gained hours that will occur as you step away from this role. Wishing you joy, success, and happiness!"

Your friend,
Daniel P. Evans, DPM, FACPM, FFPM RCPS(Glasgow)

"Dr Shapiro will remain one of the best examples of an educator that I've ever had the privilege of encountering. I'm grateful to have been a direct recipient of his teaching and mentorship when I was a student at WesternU, and beyond the classroom, he has always been generous with his time and expertise to students, residents, and peers. I began reading Practice Perfect when I was a resident and looking for perspectives and advice from outside of my own residency. It was comforting to hear those ideas from a familiar voice who in his thoughtful, no-nonsense way continued to challenge me and all readers to think broader, challenge norms, and cultivate a passion for the profession. I still read Practice Perfect every week and find myself directing students to it, hoping it inspires and challenges them as it did me. I, like many I am sure, are sad to see Practice Perfect end but wish Dr. Shapiro the best as this chapter closes for him. Practice Perfect will be just one of Dr. Shapiro’s many accomplishments in a remarkable career, and I hope all those who have read him for years continue to embody the goals set by Dr. Shapiro with Practice Perfect - continued promotion of podiatry and the passionate pursuit of knowledge."

Kelly Parks, DPM

"Practice Perfect podiatry posts have been and are my favorite online education due to the research, quality, and insightful information each issue provides. It will be missed. Best wishes to Jarrod in the next part of your professional and personal life. Job well done."

Thank You,
Charles Boyd, DPM (class of 84)

"I am a Nurse Practitioner working in Podiatry the last 7 years. I don’t know how I started to get the emails, I think after a conference, but I actually read them and found them helpful. I’m wishing Dr. Shapiro the best and he’s a great leader knowing when to call it quits and move on from his “baby”. Also appreciate him sticking his neck out for NPs and writing a few articles about the benefit of Nurses working with Podiatrists!"

Brenda Coupar, DNP

"Simply put, Just Wondrous! So many insightful and thought-provoking subject matters. Dr. Shapiro embodies the true meaning of altruism and fraternity in our profession. I am most thankful for having been a subscriber from the beginning."

Sincerely,
Dr. Louis J. Ciravolo

"I truly enjoy reading Dr. Shapiro’s insights. His breadth of knowledge and unwavering dedication to teaching clinicians at all levels are remarkable. Reflecting on my own professional journey, I wish I had benefited from more role models who guided education in the manner he does.

Kudos to him for his hard work and for his continued commitment to educating us all."

Best regards,
Debra Manheim

"I am not a podiatrist, but I have been an office manager for the same practice for nearly 25 years. As such, I get a LOT of newsletters that are deleted as soon as they hit my inbox. However, that is not the case when I see Dr. Shapiro’s. Every week for many years I have looked forward to seeing the topic he will tackle next, and I always learn something.

The ones I have loved the most are the ones where he talks about his personal experiences with being a podiatrist and the ones that explore “settled” science---like nothing to eat or drink at least 8 hours prior to surgery. He really captures the heart of being a doctor there in the trenches not just with other doctors, but I always felt he was able to put himself not only in his patients’ shoes, but also his staff’s. I could tell that when they were struggling or celebrating, he was right there struggling or celebrating with them.

I wish all the best for him as he steps away from Practice Perfect, and I hope he finds another endeavor that enriches his life and those who are blessed to work with him."

"Hello Jarrod, you may remember me from 24 years ago at the Phoenix VAMC. You were a student and I was a resident. I always knew you would do great things! Thank you so much for your dedication over the past 20 years with Practice Perfect. You have been very inspiring! I hope you are doing well."

My best,

"Dear Dr Shapiro,

Thanks for years of teaching and good advice. Podiatry training (and practice) is full of much accumulated junk - you helped teach us to see through that to the substance.

Thanks for teaching us to use our brains as well as our hands."

Laura Poindexter Rowe, WUCPM '17

"Thank you Dr Shapiro for all of your editorials, but most of all your insight and gentle guidance to our profession and life values."
