The purpose of this free half day virtual conference will be to provide updates on the evolving understanding of the epidemiology and pathophysiology of nail and skin structure infections and inflammatory processes. New techniques in diagnosis will be discussed. The problem of antifungal resistant dermatophytes will be reviewed. Treatment best practices in adults and children with onychomycosis using new evidence-based treatment guidelines will be explained. This in turn will help providers to integrate evidence-based strategies and procedures into their clinical practice to treat fungal and bacterial nail and skin structure infections and inflammatory conditions in these complicated patients.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To be able to identify and treat onychomycosis using the most recently published, evidence-based treatment recommendations.
  2. Identify and demonstrate the epidemiology and pathophysiology of dermatological manifestation of lower limb including fungal and bacterial infections.
  3. Recognize the various clinical presentations of onychomycosis.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to diagnose onychomycosis using clinical and laboratory criteria.
  5. Recognize that onychomycosis is an infection that should be treated as an infection.
  6. Discuss treatment of MRSA skin and skin structure infections.
  7. Evaluate the available evidence for the use of OTC antifungals in the treatment of onychomycosis.
  8. Interpret the use of the pathology laboratory in the diagnosis and treatment of onychomycosis.
  9. Recognize when a fungal infection may be resistant to commonly used antifungal drugs.
  10. Recognize, diagnose, and treat various inflammatory skin diseases of the lower extremity.
