Comparison of Complication and Reoperation Rates for Minimally Invasive Versus Open Cheilectomy of the First Metatarsophalangeal Joint

MIS surgery has increased in popularity recently due to the improved cosmesis and reduced risk and comorbidity for many procedures. For an arthritic 1st MTPJ, the cheilectomy has been the mainstay treatment to increase range of motion and maintain the integrity of the joint. Unfortunately, there is scarce literature on MIS cheilectomies. In this study, MIS and open cheilectomies were compared and assessed for complications and further surgery. They found that the open group required less surgery (2.6% vs 12.8%) and had fewer complications (2.6% vs 11.3%). Therefore, they concluded that MIS may have a proposed faster recovery and better cosmesis. However, there are greater associated risks and complications including return to operation than an open procedure.
