Effectiveness of Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy in the Treatment of Chronic Insertional Achilles Tendinopathy
There is no good evidence for the proposed treatment of chronic insertional Achilles tendinopathy with extracorporeal shockwave therapy. The current literature is scarce, with most studies favoring ESWT without any control trials. This study explores this conservative treatment with a control sham group to assess the effectiveness of low energy ESWT. In this double blinded RCT, they found no difference in patient reporting using a visual analog scale in the long term between the 2 groups. Therefore, the researchers determined that ESWT had no effect on chronic insertional Achilles tendinopathy at 24 weeks.
