Current Concepts in Diagnosing and Treating Actinic Keratosis

Actinic keratoses (AKs) are pre-cancerous lesions that are easy to detect, diagnose and manage, once one has a strong understanding of their clinical features and appropriate treatment options. Actinic keratoses are one of the most common dermatological diagnoses worldwide, especially among the elderly, fair-skinned and immunocompromised populations. Controversies exist regarding active treatment vs simple surveillance of these lesions. Prospective studies have shown that many cases of actinic keratosis can spontaneously regress. On the other hand, the estimated percentage of actinic keratosis progressing to squamous cell carcinomas arise in 0.1% per lesion per year. Recognizing the common actinic keratosis lesions early helps prevent squamous cell carcinoma while educating patients about the risks of skin cancer.
