If anyone provides you links to apply to PECOS online, PLEASE THINK TWICE BEFORE USING THEM.
MY PERSONAL OPINION IS IF YOU ARE APPLYING YOURSELF TO BE IN PECOS CONSIDER THE
WONDERFUL OPTION OF PRINTING OUT THE FORMS AND MAILING BY CERTIFIED MAIL THE ENTIRE
PECOS APPLICATION. If you have questions with the forms you will mail in you can always ask medicare.
Suggestion to print out 2 blank applications because if you make a mistake on one I do not believe it wise to have anycross outs on a PECOS application. Mailing in the entire application yourself should be free and not cost you any money if you have the time to do so.
Establishing a PECOS list so that everyone can go to it is probably the first step before an
Jan 3, 2011 deadline can be enforced. Well the list is here and you can tell all
your friends that you saw this post in podiatry.com. I believe that podiatry.com is one
of the main websites that can educate all podiatrists as to what is going on in all aspects of podiatry. Also, there is
a site called meet the masters which I am very thankful for.
I wish to thank whoever was responsible for creating podiatry.com e-talk.
One possibly can check the provider status of another provider
by going to
http://www.pecosregistration.com which is a website I designed. Just scroll down
the second column and click the section that says list of everyone enrolled in PECOS
If you are not in PECOS please seriously consider manually mailing in your application and
not applying online. If you feel your time is very valuable and wish to spend money to have a service
I recommend do this for you, there is a contact page on the above website for you to e-mail me requesting
my recommendation. There will probably be a time period from after Jan 3 2011 until you get enrolled in PECOS whereby any services requiring a referral from a provider with an NPI may be denied until you do get enrolled.
Do not take my word for it. Call Medicare and confirm what will happen after Jan 3 2011 if you are not on the PECOS list. My opinion is to call medicare stat and to make sure you are on the list or go to the above website and check for yourself.
Please understand that this links to the CMS site and here is
where it gets confusing. One can be a podiatrist registered in New Jersey in PECOS and
also practice in NY and not be in the PECOS databank for the NY carrier. What should
happen is that every state carrier is suppossed to be updating it's records using the
CMS federal site. Bottom line is if you are on the list you are basically safe "maybe". It depends if
you practice in more than one state. If you practice in more than one state this may be problematic.
Bottom line is if all the forms to manually print out are found at the above website and can be
mailed in manually this may be advantageous than applying online. The question to ask Medicare
of all the online PECOS applications how many went through as "clean applications" that did
not need to be resubmitted? Then ask the question of all the manual PECOS applications that
were mailed in, how many went in as "clean applications"? Personally after asking this question
I feel if you want to save money and do it yourself for free go to the above website, don't
pay any money and consider manually submitting the PECOS application.
Lastly, when you get that bank letter for the electronic funds transfer agreement, make sure the
bank account has the routing number and checking account number. Also if your spouse is
not a partner in your practice I believe the bank account for direct deposit should not have their
name on it. When you fill out the manual application, call the medicare enrollment dept and
ask all questions regarding how to go about filling out the application and all the documents that are needed.
Lastly again I wish to thank Paul Kesselman for all his hard work and good advice regarding
DME information.
Again, if anyone finds any links online to apply to PECOS with an online application:
PLEASE THINK TWICE BEFORE USING THEM.

standard disclaimer: Do not rely on the personal opinions above but call medicare yourself
to confirm about the PECOS application process and how to mail in a manual application.
Also, do not rely on any of the above information or opinions above but first consult with a licensed healthcare
attorney in your state.
